The Looms of Lecce
Meet Maria, a fourth-generation textile weaver who combines rustic linen with contemporary patterns, preserving a centuries-old tradition in the bustling city of Lecce.
Tucked away in a quiet courtyard in the vibrant baroque city of Lecce, you will find the rhythmic clacking of Maria's wooden loom. Maria is a fourth-generation weaver, carrying on a family tradition that dates back to the 1800s.
While her ancestors primarily wove simple, utilitarian fabrics, Maria has introduced contemporary geometric patterns inspired by modern art and architecture. She uses only locally sourced, natural fibers like Mediterranean linen and pure cotton.
'The loom is an extension of my body,' she says. 'Every throw of the shuttle is a connection to my great-grandmother.'
Maria's workshop is open to visitors, who can watch the mesmerising process of threads transforming into beautiful, durable textiles that embody the spirit of Puglia.
